Timeout With Good Behavior
I have been searching for a long time to find a scale that does NOT have an irritating, short timeout. Finally, after 2 weeks with this OXO 5lb. Food scale I think I’ve found one.Here’s how it works. After 5 minutes of inactivity the illuminated display goes dim. But it still recalls the weight of whatever is on it for another 10 minutes. Tap the weighed item with your finger and the display lights up instantly with perfect memory of your weighed item, and the entire timeout sequence restarts anew.If you leave it unused for more than 15 minutes the scales shuts down and the memory of the weighed item is lost – it will read Zero if you turn it on again. If you have good lighting, and good eyes, you can actually read the scale during the last 10 minutes of the timeout. It’s very dim, but you can see the digits if you look closely.There is a feature that keeps the scale on forever (or a bug depending on how you feel about this). If you zero out an item on the scale (say your steel mixing bowl) and remove it, the scale will naturally read a negative amount. What’s interesting is that as long as it’s reading a negative amount it never turns itself off (well, I waited over 30 minutes and didn’t turn off, so I am making an assumption here). I think the idea is that the scale knows it is in use, and waits patiently for you to return with your bowl and get back to work. I love this feature, but from reading other reviews it’s clear others do not.Another nice thing – the display lights up – this is better than simple backlighting as each segment of each digit glows. The scale is accurate to 1 gram (perfectly matched out existing scale during my testing). This scale is cheaper than another OXO model that has a stainless steel rather than plastic weighing tray. We have loads of stainless steel in our kitchen at the moment and I am perfectly content with the all plastic design. Of course if you need 10 lb. capacity, rather than 5 lb. then you will want the stainless steel model.For those among us that are capable of manually turning off appliances this may be one of the best 5 lb. scales on the market.

What was the downfall for me it did not have a removable table or shelf so that I could take it off and wash it and the digital reader part didn’t seem to use it space correctly it is okay but I have seen better

Replaced my old scale
It’s sooo much better than my old cheap scale I’ve used for 10 years. Love the ease of going from Oz to grams without needing to turn it over to change. Nice large digital reader so don’t have to grab my eyeglasses, and the pull out reader it great for large mixing bowls. The only problem? Wished I’d bought it sooner.

I use it for larger items.
I like this scale when I make bread, I put a plastic bowl on it and sift the flour right into it.It isn’t as precise for tiny amounts but I have a small scale when I need that. I have some calibration weights and found that one gram accuracy is pushing it. But a cook should have two scales anyway, one with a larger capacity and one with a smaller one. I like that you can pull the display out and that it doesn’t go off right away. I got the 5lb one because I don’t really need to weigh 11 pounds of anything. The platform is removable for cleaning but it takes quite a bit of force to get off and on. I haven’t really had to clean it yet, I might never have to. It’s nice to know I can.I use weigh boats and other containers, I don’t just put stuff on it to weigh

My favorite scale???
I have long sought after the perfect kitchen scale, I think this scale is the one for me…I have had many digital scales over the years. They all have a very irritating feature built in where they are always turning themselves off…I did not like that feature. Another annoyance was how difficult weighing in a large mixing bowl was, because I could not see the screen. Yet another detail overlooked by those old scales was how awkward moving the scale was. My last scale had ” touch” buttons that would activate any time I touched the scale, and even sometimes when I didn’t touch it, I found it on many times in the middle of the night.This OXO scale does not suffer from those shortcomings…First, this scale has buttons that depress and I can tell when I press a button. Second, I really love that this scale stays on longer than just a couple minutes. I cannot count the times I have been annoyed by other scales timing out quickly. Third, I can place my large OXO Good-Grip mixing bowl on this scale and without even pulling out the display I can easily see the readout. And, as a bonus, fourthly, OXO has designed a simple, yet effective tab on its front which allows me to easily move the scale around my kitchen. There are a couple other nice features that you’ll notice if you buy one too…Overall, this is the scale I’ve been looking for. OXO is a brand I trust and so I expect it to last me for years. That makes me happy with my purchase…

Loving this scale – the detachable reader is perfect for putting a Dinner Plate on, and measuring food as you’re adding it to the plate. Saves me extra dishes.

This scale has a pull out display so that any plate/container used to weigh can still be seen. It is a compact device that can always be reset to ‘0’ for the container used to weigh. I use it constantly and it appears to be accurate. I find it to be better than my other scale.
