Praise for the first edition:
“A solid beginner’s reference, especially for those seeking the authority of medical studies.”
— Library Journal
“Recommended.”
— American Reference Books Annual 2010
Over 80 superfood entries updated with the latest health research discoveries.
Since this comprehensive reference was first published, major studies have reinforced the importance and potential value of obtaining nutrients from foods rather than supplements. Many of the studies have discovered previously unknown health benefits of great significance, such as a reduced risk for dementia with the consumption of blueberries.
In all, over 80 entries in this new edition have had their “Healthy Evidence” section updated to reflect the outcome of major reputable medical studies, including:
Garlic supplements are beneficial for cirrhosis patientsCherries will lessen the frequency of gout attacksSoybean consumption is effective in lowering cholesterolKale inhibits the growth of human colon cancer cells
Studies have also confirmed that Chia seed is a superfood for its protective effects against heart disease.
Superfoods is organized in broad categories: Vegetables; Mushrooms; Legumes; Fruits; Nuts and Oils; Herbs and Spices; Grains; Meat, Seafood, and Dairy; Beverages and Treats; and Nutritional Supplements. Each entry notes the food’s origin, its seasonal availability and nutritional values, tips on how to add it to an eating plan and how to optimize its nutrients and phytochemicals.
Nutrient breakdowns are derived from the USDA’s Nutrient Database, and “The Healthy Evidence” refers to published peer-reviewed studies available from the US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health database. The book closes with Nutritional Tables, a quick-reference guide to the nutritional content of the “superfoods” listed in the book. Star ratings indicate the most notable nutrients in each superfood. With Superfoods, readers will get the most nutritional bang for their buck.

Highly recommend
I love this book. If you are someone who is interested in learning about foods and what specific foods benefit this book is for you. It is so knowledgeable. It not only tells you the benefits of a multitude of different foods, it also gives suggestions for how to prepare them and what foods to pair together to help with absorption. Highly recommend!

An impressive book on the topic of nutrition
This book is well organized and presents each individual food in a standard discussion format, which makes the key nutrition information easy to understand for the layman. The references to studies of the health effects are useful and persuasive. The ability of each food to protect against common ailments is given in a clear manner. I imagine other buyers of this book are working through personal health issues, as I am. I am recovering from surgery for coronary arterial disease. A possible future edition addendum could be a cross reference of the very best foods for the support of major health issues, such as cardio-vascular, blood imbalances, cancer, auto-immune deficiency, liver disease, kidney disease, bacterial or viral disease, obesity, diabetes and so forth. There is a cross reference of individual foods to their beneficial components, such as vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidant effects. The disease preventive effects are clearly listed in the individual food item discussions, but a summary index of those benefits by disease type would make that very useful information a little more accessible. This is an impressive book on the topic of nutrition.

Best book ever!
Such great recipes and so much valuable information that I haven’t found anywhere else, and all written by professionals in the health field, not just cookbook authors. I use it daily and thank goodness I have those ‘favorite’ recipes memorized as the pages were getting super-messy. Guess I need one of those cookbook holders with a plastic shield!

Pretty good
A lot of pretty pictures and very high level overview…nice to have but not a core book for nutritional health knowledge

The best list I could hope for
This is the only book in this style I own and I don’t feel a need to get another. Explanations of each of the most healthy – and typically really easy to find – foods.
