Savanna Hair Co. – Octocurl

I created this product out of a personal need. I’ve never liked using heat on my hair so I would wash my hair at night and twist it up into a microfiber turban to dry my hair overnight while creating some waves.
There were 2 problems:
1) It always fell off 2) I wanted more curls
So early summer of 2017 I played around with the idea of sewing strips onto a headband. By December we were online and we’ve loved bringing it to you ever since! xo

How did we get our start?
Our founder created the original Octocurl design at her kitchen table in the summer of 2017 by cutting up strips of paper and stapling them to a headband. She became obsessed with this idea and tested all summer by using single strips, double strips, quadruple strips… she wrapped, curled, twisted, bent, & braided.
What problem are we solving?
There are countless heat tools on the market. Our mission is to offer options for great hair styling without the use of heat.
Why do we love what we do?
We truly enjoy helping women look and feel their best while also “going easy”!

Very easy to use!
I’ve tried two other heatless curl systems and I just wasn’t coordinated enough to wrap my hair. They would always be too loose or so messy that my curls came out crazy. This is very easy to use because the octo legs hang off a center piece which you can clip at the top of your head. The first time I used it, I curled strands around each leg, but I have naturally wavy/curly hair and this gave me crazy tight curls that looked wild! The second time I used it, I would hold two legs together which increased the thickness (similar to using a larger barrel on a curling wand) and this gave me a much more relaxed curl. I use it on dry hair since my natural hair will curl with just about any bend you put to it, but I think for longevity starting with slightly damp hair would be better.

Theres also learning curve but it really does work!!
This takes a little experience to get the hang of it. But when you do! Goodness it works very well. The first time I tried using this it turned out terrible. The second time it turned out fantastic. I’ll give you a few pointers that helped me. I did not use any hair products at all. Im not sure how that would impact the outcome. The first time I tried it, I rolled or twisted the hair tight before twisting it onto the octocurl. This just made it more difficult to release or break up the curls when removing the hat. I found just looping the hair around the ropes worked best. Make sure you are brushing the hair as you go, so in the morning it comes out smooth and not tangled. I wrap the strand a few times, brush the strand and repeat until I get to the bottom. When you get to the bottom leave about an inch of hair OUT and about 1 inch of the rope without hair. Fold the rope where there is no hair and use the rubber band to secure. Leave the end of the hair outside of the wrap. If you dont you will get a tangled crimped up mess at the ends of the hair. When your wrapping the hair start at the top of the head and take a small ammount at first, and as you go down add more to the twist, from the scalp, similar to French braiding (but much easier). When you first start, clip the hat to your hair so it stays in place. Don’t put to much on one twist. If you need to, you can divide your hair in two and it makes it easier to judge how much to divide between the twists. I did start with dry hair and sprayed it with a mister. Im not very good at giving tutorials but you get the idea. Im glad my daughter talked me into trying it once more before tossing it because the first and second time using it was night and day. My daughter has stick straight hair and this device is incredible. I’ll show the first and second try in photos.

Good Concept, Could be Slighlty Better
I like the concept, but I don’t love the elastics at the bottom. I prefer to use my own scrunchies. Also, I always end up with 1 extra on each side so wish each piece snapped off instead of sections so it would be truly customizable. I didn’t get the long version. I got the medium but I am going to purchase the one for long hair so I can pull them back and secure them together so they are not so dangly.

Great quality but not sure they sent the correct size for long hair
These are great quality but I am not sure if they sent me the correct one for long hair.

Not worth it
Product had a horrible burnt plastic smell. After airing it out for a few days, i tried it on my daughter’s hair. Horrible! Very difficult to use and the curls did not last 5 minutes.

Creates beautiful curls
Comfortable to wear and creates beautiful curls. There is a big learning curve to use but minor adjusts after first use worked great. Foam rods are very long even for hair that goes down to the knees. Would consider sizing down if purchased again. Curls lasted multiple days, didn’t fall much if any between washes.

Comfortable for sleep
I love the satin material of these and are surprisingly comfortable to sleep in. I also love how the hair ties are incorporated in the curlers. My hair feels healthier using these heatless curleres rather that any heat method. The middle sits nicely on my part as well.

Wouldn’t recommend
I liked the concept, but it made my hair super frizzy.
